We recently had a trip to the vet where we learned that Archie is too fat. Like waaay too fat. Our vet has recommended we see a nutritionist in order to get him back to a healthy weight.
We stumbled across a show on Netflix all about the pet food industry called Pet Fooled.
Watching Pet Fooled opened my eyes to the fact that I actually know very little about my dog’s nutritional requirements.
I have always done what I’m sure many pet owners do, buy the food that looks the “healthiest”, without actually knowing just what is in the food I am feeding them.
Though Pet Fooled is filmed in America, most of the information they talk about is relevant to us here in Australia. For instance, have you ever looked at the ingredients in the biscuits you feed your fur baby? Me neither. After watching this documentary, I had a look to see just what is on the ingredients list, and if I’m being honest I’m still not sure exactly what is in there! The language used is not clear and without researching each ingredient how do we know what these ingredients are?
I was very surprised to find out that most of the major pet food brands are run by confectionery companies and that Australian pet food is self-regulating with voluntary industry standards applied through the Pet Food Industry Association of Australia (PFIAA).
With strict human food codes, it is concerning that we are not entitled to the same information for the food we are feeding our pets.

Pet Fooled was very eye opening and has brought to my attention that I need to learn more. After some personal research, I am considering switching to homemade food, so I know exactly what they are eating. I am excited to meet with the nutritionist to discuss what foods are best to feed my fur kids.
Our pets are with us for such a short time and are members of our family. I want to make sure my dogs are healthy and are with us as long as possible. Archie and I are on a mission to get him to a healthy weight so he will live a long happy life. Stay tuned for Archie’s weight loss journey.
If you are looking for something to watch on Netflix, I suggest giving Pet Fooled a watch. It, together with my vet’s advice, has changed the way I think about what is in my dog’s dinner.
